Introduction
Imagine high-speed highways built right under our feet but made for data instead of people. These are internet cables, made of hundreds of fiber optic cables buried underground — some being used and some not. Dark fiber refers to unused optical fiber cable, laid during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Now, as AI and data centres demand unprecedented bandwidth, dark fiber's untapped potential is finally being realized.
The Internet's Buried Treasure
Back then, companies got a little too excited about the Internet's future. They buried way more fiber-optic cables than necessary, betting on something that could utilise it. Most of those cables were left unused and given a mysterious and spooky name — dark fiber.
Ghosting? AI said "Bet"
Dark fibers have a lot of features:
- Data travels over an isolated network, thus reducing cyberthreats.
- It provides very low latency — meaning zero delay — making information transfer seamless, safe and fast.
- High amounts of data can be transferred without traffic, and it's cost effective as it's a one-time setup.
- Network capacities can be varied by upgrading the laser.
Conclusion
You cannot scale intelligence on bandwidth you do not own, which is why everyone is digging. Turns out, we did not need new inventions — we just had to turn the lights back on!
